Eighteen

After a quick wardrobe change at home, Michelle was back at headquarters with Jason looking at potential locations to explore. At the top of her list to visit was another large property–this one in Maine on an island called Frenchville. For the past one hundred years, the island’s census held steady at sixty-one, but recently according to one gossip site, people were moving off the island. Again, it was a poorly populated area but was owned by a subsidiary of Niemi’s company. There was heavy tree growth in the area that hid the land from satellites. Some of the trees were evergreens, while others were waiting to bloom with Spring. The island contained a private airstrip and a dock. He would want multiple ways to escape. She and Jason discussed the raw materials and work needed to convert the uranium hockey pucks into nuclear weapons. A big space wasn’t necessary, and the supplies could have been delivered by ferry in a crate. The island was about nine miles long, and Michelle needed to strategize where to search. She loved the fact there were trees everywhere. If she found herself in a tight situation, she would be able to move quickly for cover.

After more conversation about where to search, Michelle said, “We seem to be going in a circle. I’m going to leave for the island now, and I’ll report back what I see.”

“I’ll join you up there this evening after we get some more work done here,” Jason said.

“Does anyone know if they found Mr. Niemi’s plane?” Michelle asked.

People shook their heads, so she made a mental note to ask Sheila on her way out. It would be good to know if she was facing down their suspect or just his minions.

When she walked into the area where Sheila’s assistant sat, she was glad to see the seat was empty; she would be able to teleport out of her boss’s office and home to change her clothing once again before heading to Maine. She knocked on the door, having checked with Sheila that she was available to answer questions.

“Has Pete’s group found the plane?”

“It’s weird. The plane headed out straight over the Pacific Ocean and then disappeared from radar.”

“Did it crash?”

“If it did, there are no signs of wreckage at the point where we lost signal with the plane, according to the Coast Guard.”

“So you think Niemi’s plane is alive and well and heading back inland over the United States?”

“I do. Knowing the guy for being a technology and manufacturing whiz, he probably has some coating on the plane that makes it hard to detect. We have FAA airport towers on alert if they spot the plane, and that’s all we can do.”

“Darn! I should have taken a few extra minutes to try and put a transmitter on that plane. Do you think you will find it?” Michelle asked.

“Yes, if it stays in American airspace; otherwise no.”

“Okay. I’m heading over to Maine to look at a private island that he owns.
